Microsoft Philippines to stop Windows XP sales by Feb
By DAVID DIZON, abs-cbnNEWS.com | 01/20/2009 9:38 PM

Starting February 1, 2009, Microsoft Philippines will no longer sell Windows XP to its distributors. For this reason, consumers who still want to purchase Windows XP with new PCs are highly encouraged to buy the software now -- while supplies are still available in stores.

"We are really proud and happy that Windows XP made a difference in the market. It has empowered a lot of customers and contributed to the growth of most businesses in terms of their IT infrastructure," said Chay Saputil, Product Manager for Windows, Microsoft Philippines.

"At the same time, we want to encourage customers to try out Windows Vista. Windows Vista is the most secure and reliable version of Windows that provides every user a safer and more secure computing experience. It is also designed to make PC tasks easier, faster and more entertaining," Saputil added.

Customers using Windows XP will still be supported with security and critical updates until April 2014. In addition to this, Microsoft has released Windows XP Service Pack 3 which includes all previously released Windows XP security updates and hotfixes so users could still enhance their operating systems.

Users who are using Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate also have the option to use Windows XP Professional through a customer benefit called downgrade rights. Downgrade rights allow eligible users to acquire Windows Vista, but continue to run Windows XP until they are ready to upgrade. There are no downgrade rights to Windows XP Home.

"We encourage businesses that buy these versions of Windows Vista on new PCs to exercise their downgrade rights. This is a great value because it lets them use Windows XP on new PCs today and then transition to take advantage of the additional capabilities of Windows Vista when they are ready, without having to pay for an upgrade," Saputil said.

As the end of sales for Window XP commences, Microsoft believes that this is a great opportunity for customers to progress their computing experience to Windows Vista, its latest operating system which features higher levels of reliability, support, security, performance and administration.

To provide the highest level of support and ensure that their customers get the most of their PC experience, Microsoft has also released Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), the complete collection of Windows Vista updates that is sure to help users to easily find solutions to address compatibility issues. At present, Windows Vista supports about 77,000 components and devices.
